Description
CIFOR is looking for a Senior Editor, Multimedia Services Manager
The Senior Editor, Multimedia Services Manager will lead a highly motivated and skilled team of 14 staff and consultants — web masters, graphic artists, production and printing specialists — and 15 contracted research editors and translators, providing CIFOR’s multimedia and publishing services. The Senior Editor, Multimedia Services Manager will report to the Director of Communications/Information Services.
As Chief Editor he or she will ensure that CIFOR meets the highest editorial standards, will be decisive, and will have an instinctual feeling for the art of research editing. The successful candidate will be joining a programme in its third year of a cutting-edge development communication model that is delivering double- and triple-digit growth across all metrics, from downloads and dissemination of publications and journal articles to media hits and web visitors. He or she will build and continuously improve policies, procedures and systems for the rapid and efficient development and delivery of our communication products. Over the course of the 3-year appointment, she/he will ensure that staff are exposed to, trained in, and applying and meeting the best practices and industry standards to deliver consistent quality, and set production schedules that balance workloads and family. The editor will oversee guidelines and rosters and tracking forms, but appreciate the flexibility that is essential in an exciting and fast-moving communication environment.

Duties and responsibilities
Production
Develop and oversee a production unit to match CIFOR’s communications strategy with an emphasis on streamlining the flow of all forms of content among databases, web pages and publications.
Lead the multimedia production staff to develop systems to develop production methods, plans and budgets to ensure CIFOR communication outputs target their defined audiences and achieve intended impacts, with due regard for timelines and deadlines.
Work with web, publications and graphics staff to identify creative and efficient management techniques.
Create a work environment that is creative, rewards risks, and is fun.
Manage production staff to coordinate workload and production schedules with other colleagues, identify priorities with their supervisors, and balance the output between staff and consultants.
In collaboration with human resource staff, develop on-demand training programmes for staff to ensure good practice and compliance with guidelines.
Oversee the web portal for CIFOR staff to access ISG services including: CIFOR style guides, publication pipelines, tools to help develop and cost communication products.
Implement and manage efficient systems for identifying and commissioning rosters of language consultants and suppliers, including external editors, translators, proofreaders and other external contractors for pre-press work; monitor the quality and timeliness of their work and put in place effective contract review processes so our content development meets our standards.
Manage the maintenance of budgeting tools and rosters of editors and suppliers, contact suppliers, and help draft contracts.
Editorial support services
Edit one page daily ‘CIFOR Today’, and provide general editing assistance as needed with other members of the department. Sign off/proofread all content going onto the main CIFOR website.
Edit documents on an emergency basis, including writing, abridging, restructuring and rectifying substantive errors.
Establish editorial policies and procedures. Assist in the elaboration of and regularly update publishing guidelines for staff and consultants working with content development.
Evaluate the suitability of communication products for release or publication in English and our other primary languages: French, Spanish and Indonesian. Ensure the pertinence and high quality of our publications.
Work closely and harmoniously with scientists and stakeholders in development and production of appropriate research publications and outputs.
Provide writing assistance for various web-based products.
Respond to internal and external queries on editorial practice, review the work of editors and writers, and provide guidance to staff and contractual content developers and editors.
Oversee the posting of all web content to ensure it meets Center standards.
Oversee, coordinate and prepare ancillary materials for promotional events, scientific conferences and publication launches.
Coordination within CIFOR and externally
Champion learning to develop our communication products through and with online collaboration tools.
Collaborate closely with the three other managers in the Information Services Department in constantly monitoring, reviewing, adapting the Center’s communication strategy to meet and surpass clear targets.
Work closely with scientists and programme directors to marshal intellectual resources and develop appropriate communications products, from project websites to conference flyers, to meet donor deliverables.
Organise and conduct meetings associated with publications and represent the work of the unit at external meetings.
Contribute to maintaining the status of our communication outputs as international public goods as it relates to publication contracts, dissemination partnerships and links with communication intermediaries.
Requirements
Education, experience and technical skills
An advanced university degree, Masters degree or equivalent in social sciences, communications, journalism, international affairs or a related field.
Seven to ten years of progressively responsible experience, in writing, editing and print or electronic publishing at the international level. Experience in the areas of environmental sciences, culture and/or science is an asset. Work in the private sector is an asset.
At least seven years of editing or copy-editing experience.
Firm grasp of contemporary publishing procedures, design and layout and production.
Solid writing and analytical abilities with sensitivity to nuance. Ability to tailor language, tone, style and format to match audience.
Ability to establish priorities and to plan, coordinate, manage and monitor the work of others.
Strong written and verbal communication skills. Openness in sharing information.
Excellent knowledge of English and at least one other global language. Knowledge of Indonesian is an asset.
Personal attributes and competencies Creative and has an instinctual feeling for the art of research editing. Proven experience in managing editing and/or publishing teams. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to effectively interact with people in a multi-disciplinary and multicultural environment.
Proven teambuilding capacity and proven experience in developing staff through coaching and mentoring in multicultural workplaces.

Terms and conditions
This is an internationally recruited position. CIFOR offers a competitive remuneration commensurate with skills and experience.
The appointment will be for 3 years, including a standard one-year probationary period, with the possibility of extension contingent upon performance, continued relevance of this position and available resources.
