Description

The Gatsby Africa (UK) and the UK Department for International Development (DFID) have committed seed funding for Msingi’s first 5 years. Gatsby is an independent foundation set up in 1967 by Lord David Sainsbury, and has worked in East Africa since 1985. Gatsby initiated the concept of Msingi and is playing a hands-on role in its development. DFID, the UK government department responsible for overseas aid, aims to promote sustainable development and alleviate poverty.

Purpose of the Finance and Investment Director role

The Finance and Investment Director will ensure strategic direction and leadership is provided towards the efficient and effective use, deployment and accounting of Msingi funds.
S/he is the primary person to oversee the following functions in Msingi: investment, finance, operations (which includes procurement, IT & health and safety activities), ensuring fit for purpose strategies, policies, procedures and systems are designed and implemented for these functions. S/he will line manage a Finance Manager and Operations Manager.
The Finance and Investment Director will also serve as the coordinator of the organizations governance framework, ensuring all processes are complied with and that there is an effective flow of information and communication to the Board, Board Committees and management

Key responsibilities

Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, the role holder will be responsible for:

 Developing and overseeing implementation of Msingi’s investment policies, processes and systems including the requisite legal and tax structures to facilitate deal execution;
 Providing the industry team with investment advisory on various areas including forecasting, management of the investment portfolio, evaluating opportunities for investment, due diligences, assessing investment risks, and validating the investment opportunity for the desired strategic intent, outcome and impact, providing input in the transaction process from valuation, preparation and review of documents, establishing an investment case, structuring and negotiating terms, and engaging advisors and others as may be required;
 Assisting in originating a pipeline of new investments which may involve screening new investment opportunities through client outreach, marketing and deal screening;
 Undertaking and managing the necessary due diligence, financial modeling, risk analysis and mitigation in the structuring of loans and equity investments;
 Supporting or leading the internal approval processes including interface with credit, safeguards, integrity, legal and other teams as well as management and the Board;
 With the support of internal and external counsel, ensures for all deals that appropriate legal documentation is successfully concluded in line with approvals and that financial close (i.e., first disbursement) is achieved in a timely fashion;
 Undertaking the implementation and the hand-over of administration of private sector infrastructure programs and projects, ensuring compliance with required guidelines, policies and procedures as well as agreed covenants and reporting requirements up to financing effectiveness;
 Leading the process of developing, presenting and getting approvals for Msingi’s Annual Operation Plan and budgets – using a consultative process with the CEO, SMT and Board Members;
 Ensuring the finance, investment, operations & procurement and IT reporting and management processes, procedures and systems are in place and are executed as is required by the team. These include financial and accounting statements, periodic reports, forecasts, cashflow statements, investments reports, IT reports and Operations & procurement reports;
 Ensuring value for money principles and practices are applied and impact achieved in line with Msingi’s strategic intent;
 Ensuring Msingi’s finance, IT, operations, procurement and investments systems, processes and procedures are robust, legally compliant and they support Msingi’s current and future needs. Ensure that the systems, processes and procedures have adequate internal and external controls and they support transparency and accountability;
 Supporting the CEO on Governance by leading in the identification and mitigation of organizational wide risks, and ensure implementation of risk and compliance policies, with the CEO and Company Secretary, to maintain and update Msingi’s governance framework, and monitor compliance of the same with legal and regulatory policies in the region;
 Supervise the team in managing finance, operations and investments to ensure they perform to required standards and performing with high levels of motivation, engagement and contributing positively to Msingi’s culture development process.
Experience and personal qualities required
Msingi is looking for high calibre professionals that have:
 A minimum of a Master’s degree in Business Administration, Strategic Management, Commerce, Finance, Economics or related field. Must also have professional accounting qualifications such as CPA K/ ACCA or related qualification;
 At least 15 years professional experience of which at least eight years should be in an investment role at a senior leadership level;  Demonstrated experience and success in two or more of the following areas: financing strategies and investments; corporate finance; M&A and transactions;
 Solid experience in Corporate Governance processes and practices;  Experience in successfully identifying, contracting and managing the performance of contractors, particularly in operational areas outlined above;
 Experience with financial reporting within a donor funded organization or programmes, as well as engaging with and managing a complex network of stakeholders from a range of organizations such as businesses, investors and the public sector;
 Ability to develop strategic relationships and manage them;
 Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret complex and conflicting information;
 Strong strategic thinking skills and good judgment - ability to reflect on the variety of likely impacts or outcomes from an activity and to determine pragmatic approaches to getting results;
 Strong leadership, coaching and mentoring abilities;
 Exemplary numerical and verbal communication skills in English, able to communicate complex issues with clarity among different Msingi stakeholders;
 Good report writing skills and the ability to deliver documents at the highest levels of professionalism;
 Good interpersonal and emotional intelligence skills;
 Strong commitment to quality and attention to detail;
 Ability to deal well with complexity and ambiguity, including being excellent flexibility, quick learner and adaptable;
 Values Msingi’s values of transparency, integrity, excellence, collaboration and innovation;
 Demonstrable business acumen, and be entrepreneurial and innovative;
 Computer skills (MS Office, Excel, Word, PowerPoint).

Terms and remuneration

The contract for this work will be permanent and full-time. The job will be based in Nairobi with some regional travel. The salary will be competitive and is negotiable dependent on experience.
