Heartland Alliance Marjorie Kovler Center helps transform the lives of individuals recovering from the complex consequences of politically-sanctioned torture. Kovler Center provides medical, mental health, and social services; trains and educates locally and globally; and advocates for the end of torture worldwide. Kovler Center is one of the oldest and largest torture treatment centers in the United States, drawing on the skills of staff and more than 100 volunteer mental health and medical professionals to provide services for more than 350 survivors of torture from 77 countries.

Overview

HAI seeks an Associate Director of Development to build and sustain strategic relationships and cultivate new sources of funding in Chicago, with a special focus on supporting Kovler Center. This position will allow HAI to grow its unrestricted funding base to better support the Kovler Center and invest in its other innovative programs to support global human rights. The Associate Director of Development will be responsible for raising unrestricted funds for program priorities through individual major gifts and corporate partnerships, through supporting foundation proposals, and through other campaigns.

The incumbent will be an independent and energetic self-starter capable of helping launch a nascent fundraising program. S/he will have a strong track record in fundraising, with a focus on major gifts; excellent representation skills; and an ability to quickly grasp and communicate HAI’s program work. The Associate Director of Development will report to the Director of External Relations, will work closely with the Senior Director, Marjorie Kovler Center. S/he will collaborate closely with the program development and technical teams, regional and country office leadership, and Heartland Alliance’s Donor and Community Relations team in identifying, developing, coordinating, and maintaining HAI’s relationships and partnerships in Chicago and across the United States.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
• Support the development and implementation of HAI and
Kovler’s annual fundraising plan.
• Secure financial support from individuals, foundations, and corporations.
• Identify and qualify new donor prospects; and develop and maintain ongoing relationships with donors.
• Determine how to best convert prospects into donors by utilizing HAI and Kovler Center’s network of board members, current funders, and beyond.
• Develop and manage targeted cultivation events, several smaller fundraising events, and an annual fundraising event.
• Manage a prospect portfolio with the highest professional and ethical standards.
• Ensure that major giving donors receive appropriate, on-target, and timely proposals, budgets, and other information needed for cultivation and solicitation.
• Develop relationships and interact directly with the HAI Board, Kovler Center’s Leadership Council and Friends of Kovler to support their cultivation efforts and optimize fundraising, visibility, and program advocacy.
• Work closely with HAI’s Senior Communications Officer to develop and write donor cultivation letters and materials.
• Manage the implementation of Raiser’s Edge and ensure data entry and gift processing.
• Utilize report analysis to develop stewardship plans.
• Develop and track proposals and reports for all foundation and corporate fundraising.
• Serve as liaison with Heartland Alliance Donor and Community Relations.
• Adhere to professional standards as outlined by Heartland Alliance, governmental bodies, professional associations, and private funding sources.
• Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree. Preferred fields include Public Policy, Social Sciences, International Development, Business Administration, non-profit management or equivalent combination of education and relevant work experience. At least 5 years of experience in fundraising, with a focus on major gifts
• Experience managing high-level relationships with donors
• A solid understanding of and experience engaging the Chicago philanthropic community.
• Demonstrated commitment to and experience in international development and/or human rights.
• Proven experience in results orientated relationship management, networking, marketing, and intelligence gathering.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Competency in Raiser’s Edge
• Social media savvy; experience using marketing campaign tools a plus.

• Excellent oral and written English language communication skills
• Knowledge of French, Spanish, or Arabic desirable
• Demonstrated competency in public speaking

Computer Skills:
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Internet Explorer, Outlook/Exchange, Windows operating systems
